How long has Marine Bio Camp been offered?

Dolphin Camp has been running every summer since 1989. Marine Bio Camp began in 1999 as a result of a collaborative alliance between Dolphin Camp and the Marine Quest program at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Their continued sponsorship of this camp has made this learning opportunity available for many students desiring careers in Marine Science.

Who attends Marine Bio Camp?

Marine Bio Camp attracts a diverse group of students from all over the world. In addition to campers from the United States and Canada, some have come from as far as England, Greenland, South Africa, Latvia, Mexico, Denmark and Switzerland.

Where is Marine Bio Camp held?

The camp is held in the Florida Keys, which are 75 miles south of Miami. Participants will visit various sites all along the length of the Keys, from Key Largo to Key West.

What will I be doing?

Marine Bio Camp is an activity-based camp. Though we do have a few classroom sessions and guest speakers, the majority of the time you are out in the field. Strong emphasis is placed on learning about careers in Marine Science and what educational paths will best support the interests and aptitudes of each student.

Activities include, but are not limited to: Snorkeling on the only living coral reef in the continental United States, kayaking through mangroves, swimming with dolphins in a semi-captive environment, observing natural behaviors of dolphins in the wild, and learning "hands-on" how to be a dolphin trainer. Yes, you even get to cut up fish for the dolphin's lunch!

How much does the camp cost?

The camp tuition is $1,950. Costs include: Hotel accommodations, all meals (from lunch on Day One through & including breakfast on the last day), admission to all events/activities, transportation to and from events, snorkel tours, mangrove tours, camp t-shirt, workshop materials, and lots of smiles! You are responsible for: round-trip airfare or transportation to Fort Lauderdale Airport, and additional money for souvenirs/gifts.

Is this camp accessible to those with special needs?

Dolphin Camp is an activity-based camp. All of the facilities that we use are wheel chair accessible. We will do everything in our efforts to accommodate those with special needs. Please contact us to discuss options.

What do I need to bring?

You are required to have your own mask, snorkel, and fins. Each person who registers will receive a complete list of things to bring including bathing suits, sandals, sunscreen, beach towel, water bottle, camera, and a phone card to call home.

To which airport should I schedule my flight?

You are responsible for getting to and from camp during certain time frames. Marine Bio Camp is not responsible for any participant that does not schedule arrival and departure times during the required time frames of camp. No exceptions.

If you are driving, please travel directly to the Embassy Suites in Ft. Lauderdale. On the first day of camp, hotel check-in is available beginning at 3:00 PM. Marine Bio Camp staff will meet you in the hotel lobby at 5:00 PM for camp check-in.

If you are flying, you need to arrive at the Ft. Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) between 11:00 AM ‚ 2:00 PM on the first day of camp. Camp staff will meet you at the baggage claim area of your airline.

On the last day of camp, departure times for those who are driving are from 11:30 - 1:00 pm. If you are flying, you must schedule your departing flight between 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM. Camp staff will transport you to the airport check-in and remain at the airport until your flight departs.

Note: Due to increased airport security, we are no longer allowed to accompany campers from their arrival gates or to departure gates.Yes. Many participants, who travel long distances to camp or want to extend their vacation, often choose to come in early or stay longer.

What happens if I need to cancel after I have registered?

Because of the popularity of Marine Bio Camp and the limited number of students we are capable of serving, we regret to inform you that the initial deposit of $395 is non-refundable.

Cancellations occurring more that 60 days prior to the first day of camp will result in a refund of payments made less the initial deposit. There is no refund of payments made if you cancel within 60 days of the start of camp.

In light of this fact, we suggest that you consider purchasing travel insurance to protect your investment. To find out more about travel insurance visit: http://www.travelguard.com Note: Trip insurance must be purchased within 15 days of making your initial deposit. Once you arrive in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, your camp begins.
